well, until the subpeonas are issued, of course. it sure is nice to say bye bye to donald rumsfeld, for the time being anyway. good riddance to bad rubbish.
now that the GOP got their asses handed to them last night, isn’t it odd how bush is suddenly taking on a conciliatory tone? last week he said “However they put it, the Democrat (sic) approach in Iraq comes down to this: The terrorists win and America loses.” today, bush said “Our troops are wondering whether or not they’re going to get the support they need after this election. Democrats are going to support our troops just like Republicans will.” i guess when impeachment looms, you start trying to make new friends, huh?
but back to rummy. at least bush is starting to get his priorities straight, as evidenced by this clip from today’s press conference*:
*snark alert

... is not one of these never-served-a-day-in-their-life neocon schmucks. no, the real mr. tough is a song off of the new yo la tengo album, i am not afraid of you and i will beat your ass.
i had the pleasure of catching the middle night of a three-night run at the fillmore last month. to be honest, this show was a bit on the noisy side (a yo la tengo show always moves back and forth between gorgeous, whispery-vocal melodic tunes and full-on distorted feedback squall). but it’s impossible not to love these misfits of rock and roll. they’re omniverous music geeks and once their broad range of influences gets fed through the YLT cuisinart, the result is purée magic.
here’s the version of mr. tough from the show on october 20th, 2006:

so… in the midst of his embarrassing little tour of campaign appearances around the country with any republican still willing to be seen in public with him, bush finds the time time to blast john kerry for ‘insulting the troops.’ conflating an admittedly stupid gaffe on kerry’s part into a smoke and mirrors distraction from reality is shameless indeed. but bush is doing something far, far worse.
bush is literally abandoning troops on the battlefield.
what a sad, pathetic, empty suit of a man. what a fucking asshole.
