the light at the end of the nightmare

sometimes i forget just how great mark morford’s columns can be. and then he reminds me with a paragraph like this one:

It is now less than one calendar year until the next presidential election. It is less than one year until the country finally takes a deep breath and flexes its atrophied muscles and opens its bloody, Cheney-punched mouth and lets it be known to the world, to the universe, to its own numb and dejected soul just exactly how unwell it has felt, how much pain has raked its heart, lo, these past seven (eight, by then) years, by ushering in an entirely new political era, as we all exhale a massive sigh of long overdue relief that — praise Jesus, Allah, Buddha and the devil all at once — the long national nightmare of George W. Bush is finally over.

read the whole column. it’s just wonderful. what a great way to start the weekend.

After reading a few of your blog entries, I have to say that you are one of the most hate-filled people I have come across in a long time. It is sad to see a person who has so little common sense and so little understanding of our beautiful nation and our place in the world community. It is sadder still that you are able to unleash your venom and vitriol on a world that is full of weak-minded, short-sighted people like yourself.

You don’t have to respect President Bush, but you should show some respect for the office and for our nation.

Thank God you have no more power than this little blog allows and thank God that the majority of our citizens can see through the socialist agenda of your political heroes.

    Have a nice day.

in your myopic little world, lanatic, you’d like to see everyone who doesn’t agree with you silenced, wouldn’t you? you might want to revisit your history books to see where that leads, but from your references to god above, i’m guessing your history education might be limited to the narrow scope of the old testament.

regardless, you clearly don’t understand some very fundamental things:

    – those of us who truly love this “beautiful nation” are sickened and appalled at what the bush administration has done to it. anyone who lends even their tacit approval to the actions and policies of the past seven years has no right to claim the mantle of patriotism. look up habeas corpus, civil liberties and torture to get yourself up to speed.
    – our “place in the world community” used to be predicated on the belief that america represented respect, compassion and freedom. ask the international community today what america stands for and you’re more likely to hear torture, imperialism and fascism. 9/11 did indeed change everything: it allowed the government to wield fear like a cudgel on scared sheep like you. the founding fathers are rolling in their graves, not just because of the actions of this administration but because a huge segment of the citizenry has inexplicably and tragically cowered in the corner while sucking their collective thumb.

you call me “hate-filled,” so let me clarify for you what it is i hate. i hate the fact that our so-called leaders have exacerbated the class divide in this country, weakened our ability to defend ourselves against real threats, foisted lie after lie upon us, driven us deep into debt and cynically divided us when we had the opportunity to come together as one. i’d posit that anyone who doesn’t hate those things is as complicit in the unraveling of this country as bush and cheney.

finally, if you find my “little blog” so offensive, there is an easy remedy for you: don’t read it. i have no interest in silencing your narrow-minded views—why would you wish to silence me? perhaps because the truth is so very painful for you to accept, as it’s 180 degrees from your superficial flag-lapel-pin ‘support the troops’-car-magnet world. i may not agree with the idiots over at little green footballs, but i would never deign to say that it’s sad they have the forum to express their profound ignorance so publicly. in fact, the more rocks we can turn over to expose mindless, conformist marching little ants like you, the better.

your “have a nice day” salutation rings about as hollow as a ted haggard tryst denial. but if it was indeed sincere, i wish you all the best in return.

Hey they’re talking about you on the radio…

  • the lanatic

I have no desire to silence you, litmus. Your right to speak is what makes our nation so wonderful. Dissent is a very necessary tool that maintains our freedom.

Your view is myopic in its own right. You seem to see only left and right. As for the chipping away of our rights, you are actually correct on that point. The problem is that it is not Bush and Cheney that are the cause of our problem. While they are complicit, they are only cogs in a larger machine. I am sure you could find plenty of evidence of the same agenda being driven by the Clinton/Gore administration. Our leaders, Democrat or Republican, are all pushing us toward the same chasm.

Yes, this administration has continued the work of previous administrations. Soon it will be time to switch roles in the good cop/bad cop game they play. Taxes will be raised again, more legislation will be passed and our once free country will morph into a nanny state.

We will continue to be micromanaged in our personal lives by laws passed by people who serve themselves rather than their constituents. We will do what you and I are doing. We will type. They will act.

I Googled Ted Haggard. I remember that news story now. It is the tale of a hypocritical false teacher who lied to himself and everyone around him. I don’t defend his actions. I couldn’t care less about him or Larry Craig or Mark Foley. They are imperfect people who caused themselves and others unnecessary pain by hiding behind a facade of piety.

As for my education, you know nothing of me. I know nothing of you. I suspect it will remain as such.

    Have a day.

i’m not sure how your initial comment “...sadder still that you are able to unleash your venom and vitriol…” could be construed as anything but a desire on your part for me not to have the ability to voice my views, but i’ll take your retraction as your final stand on the matter.

i don’t see things purely in terms of left and right. i see them in terms of right and wrong. it is right to criticize bush; on that point, even you agree. it is he who has shown no respect for his office and the nation. it is wrong to intimate that by criticizing bush, i somehow impugn the office and the nation. it’s also wrong for you to claim that bush is merely the latest in a continuum. history doesn’t support your view. other presidents who have tried to assert some version of the unitary executive theory have been beaten back by the other branches of government. bush has broken the law while claiming to be above it, all the while supported and enabled by a compliant congress and a right-leaning supreme court.

lest you think i’m holding democrats up as shining examples of what is ‘right’ these days, i’d suggest reading my post detailing the letter i sent to barbara boxer’s campaign manager. that said, many people far more knowledgeable than i on matters of political history and constitutional law agree that the bush administration, today’s republican party, and the religious right who have enabled both are far and away the most egregious offenders in the history of this nation when it comes to pushing us towards the chasm.

from your most recent post, it sounds like the impetus for your initial comment has less to do with my positions (it seems as if you fundamentally agree with me, though i sense a distinct libertarian anti-government tone in most of your comments… which juxtaposes oddly against the desire for respecting the office of the president.. but i digress) and more to do with the tone i use to express them. that’s encouraging, as it suggests that there is something more behind that IP address than someone who stopped by merely to insult me (i refer you back to your initial comment’s first paragraph).

if you really want to establish yourself, however, as someone outside of the “right vs. left” dichotomy, you might consider retiring phrases like “your socialist agenda.” next thing you know, you’ll be calling me a commie pinko. and somewhere joseph mccarthy will be smiling.

when all is said and done, i am truly grateful that you stopped by and are passionate enough about your beliefs to have left comments for me. most people just listen to the music. ;-)
